Democrats' dreams of passing an immigration bill before the midterm elections died Tuesday, when Senate Republicans blocked a measure that could have carried legislation benefiting undocumented college students.

Senate Democrats had planned to offer the bill, known as the Dream Act, as an amendment to a measure reauthorizing Defense Department programs. But Republicans thwarted that plan, gaining enough votes to defeat a motion to proceed to debate on the defense bill.

Everest College this week opened its new Santa Ana campus in an effort to meet the demand for career-focused education in Orange County.

The 37,109-square-foot campus currently serves 60 students with 40 faculty and staff members. Officials plan to grow the school's student population to 800 and total faculty to 100 by 2013.

Sen. Mike Enzi (Wyo.), senior Republican on the Senate education committee, is slamming a White House proposal designed to prevent students at for-profit career colleges from defaulting on their loans.
